REMARKS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION, MR. YAKUBU CHONOKO MAIKYAU, OON, SAN, AT THE 20TH GANI FAWEHINMI ANNUAL LECTURE HELD ON 15 JANUARY 2024 AND STATEMENT ON THE 2024-ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY

Mr. Y.C. Maikyau, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)

Distinguished Colleagues,

On January 15, 2024, the President of the NBA, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN attended the 20th Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture hosted by NBA Ikeja Branch, with the theme: Right to Self-determination and Agitation for Succession in Nigeria.

In his remarks, the NBA President noted that lack of justice in the polity has formed the bedrock of the call for secession. He said “What, in my view, has exacerbated the agitation for the exercise of the right to secede, is the absence of justice – honesty, sincerity, equity, fairness, good governance in the utilization of our resources for the common good of the Nigerian people.” Ideals, he affirmed late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN dedicated his life for.

In a similar vein, the NBA President commemorated the Armed Forces Day by commending members of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their dedication to duty and unparalleled patriotism even at and to the point of death. In his address on the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the NBA President emphasised that “To properly celebrate them, we must ensure that their labour is not in vain, and this we must do by remaining one indivisible and indissoluble nation, where truth, peace, and justice reign. It is the least we should do to uphold the values for which they paid the supreme price.”

Esteemed colleagues, the contents of these two addresses are rich, deep and they give directions to the true fulfilment of our essence as legal practitioners. They are herewith attached for your reference.

Wishing you a fulfilling week.

Yours faithfully,

Charles Ajiboye,Esq.
