Invitation to Comment – Guidelines on the Use of Technology in Legal Practice

Dear Distinguished Colleague,

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Legal Practice (NBA-SLP) Technology and Law Committee invites you to review and provide comments on its draft guidance notes/guidelines on the use of technology in the legal profession.

The guidance notes/guidelines are as follows:

  1. Draft Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Legal Profession in Nigeria
  2. Draft Privacy Guidance for Lawyers in Nigeria
  3. Draft Guidance Note on the Implementation of Information Technology Solutions for Law Firms and Legal Departments

These documents are intended to equip legal practitioners with a clear understanding of their obligations under the Rules of Professional Conduct, Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 and other relevant legislations relating to the use of technology. Your input will be useful in ensuring the guidance documents are practical and assist legal professionals in performing their responsibilities in a modern world effectively.

The draft documents can be accessed at https://nbaslp.org/committees/technology-law/

We encourage your feedback on the following aspects:

  • Clarity and Accuracy: Are the drafts clear and accurate in explaining the law and ethics as it relates to the relevant areas?
  • Best Practices: Do the drafts outline practical best practices?
  • Completeness: Are there any additional considerations or topics regarding the application of technology that should be addressed in the drafts, including additional documents?

Please submit your comments and suggestions by 6th of May to techlaw@nbaslp.org.

We appreciate your willingness to contribute to these important guidelines for the use of technology in legal practice.

Regards,

NBA-SLP
