CAPACITY BUILDING: NERC to partner with NBA

Mr. Y.C. Maikyau, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)

Members of the National Executive of the NBA on Friday 16th February visited the Headquarters of NERC in the delegation led by the President of the NBA, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau,OON,SAN.

Dafe Akpeneye , Commissioner Consumer Affairs Aisha Mahmud, Ada Ozoemena, the
Commission Secretary, Ahmadu Zubairu
General Manager, LL&C and Hauwa Yakubu
Deputy General Manager LL&C.

The discussion on how lawyers can work with the electricity regulator to ensure that the sector functions smoothly was top on the agenda. The need to discourage the filing of frivolous applications by lawyers that hampers the smooth operation of the electricity sector and encourage the development of the skills of lawyers to prevent the incursion of foreign lawyers as a result of scarcity of lawyers with sufficient capacity.

The President of the NBA assured the NERC team of the cooperation of the NBA. He further promised that a section of the forthcoming 2024 NBA Annual General Conference will be focused on the sector, and deliberate actions will be taken to improve the skills of lawyers in this special field. Mr. Maikyau noted that until Nigeria gets it right with electricity, national development will continue to be stalled.

Other national officers in attendance at the meeting were the 1st Vice President, Mrs. Linda Bala, the 2nd Vice President, Mr. Clement Chukwuemeka, the 3rd Vice President, Mandy Asagba, the Treasurer Caroline Ladidi Anze-Bishop, the Welfare Secretary Chinyere Obasi, the Publicity Secretary Akorede Habeeb Lawal and the Assistant Publicity Secretary Charles Ajiboye.

The Vice Chairman of the NERC, representing the Chairmanship of the Commission, thanked the NBA for visiting and being ready to assist in developing the state of electricity supply in Nigeria, describing same as an effort in nation building.
