NBA President Receives ICAN Delegation, Pledges Partnership on Accountability and Good Governance

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has expressed the Association’s readiness to partner with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in advancing accountability and good governance across all levels of government.

The NBA President made this known during a courtesy visit by the ICAN leadership to the NBA House in Abuja, led by ICAN President, Mr. Davidson Chizuoke Stephen Alaribe. The visit provided an opportunity for both professional bodies to explore areas of collaboration aimed at fostering transparency and ensuring that the dividends of democracy are delivered to Nigerians.

During the meeting, the ICAN President highlighted the institute’s significant strides in the accounting profession, positioning it as a globally recognized body. He introduced the ICAN Accountability Index, an initiative designed to track how government budgets and public funds translate into tangible benefits for citizens in all states of the federation. Mr. Alaribe noted that partnering with the NBA would strengthen the impact of the initiative, adding that both organizations share a common interest in ensuring accountability in governance.

In his response, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, welcomed the collaboration and described the ICAN Accountability Index as a critical project that aligns with the NBA’s mission of promoting the rule of law and good governance. He stated that through this partnership, the NBA would play a vital role in holding governments accountable, ensuring that public expectations are met through responsible budgeting and execution.

“The NBA is open to identifying areas of mutual interest with ICAN to foster national development and accountability,” Mazi Afam Osigwe said. “We are committed to supporting ICAN in its initiatives and working together to enhance transparency and professional excellence for the greater good of society.”

The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to working collaboratively on various projects that will advance accountability, fiscal responsibility, and ethical leadership in Nigeria.

This strategic alliance between the NBA and ICAN is expected to foster greater oversight in public finance management and contribute to a culture of transparency and good governance in Nigeria.
