The actions of Nigerian security agencies yesterday in preventing lawyers from accessing courts due to the trial of a single individual are troubling and constitute a grave affront to the rule of law.
The indiscriminate blockage of legal professionals from carrying out their duties, regardless of their clients or cases, undermines the fundamental principles of justice and due process. It signals a dangerous precedent where the pursuit of justice for one individual can be used to impede access for others.
Such actions not only create significant disruption to the legal system but also damage the public’s confidence in the fairness and impartiality of the courts.
The security agencies must prioritize upholding the law, respect for legal practitioners and ensuring free/ unhindered access to justice for all.
Legal Practitioners should be allowed to pursue their professional obligations without obstruction and appropriate redress should be provided.
