The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, delivered a compelling goodwill message at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Law Week of the NBA Kaduna Branch, applauding the Branch for its thoughtful and timely theme: “Strengthening the Legal Profession: Discipline, Ethics and Innovation in Contemporary Practice.”
In his remarks, the NBA President commended the leadership of the Kaduna Branch for selecting a theme that is not only timely but also fundamental to the sustenance and progress of the legal profession. He noted that “Strengthening the Legal Profession: Discipline, Ethics and Innovation in Contemporary Practice” is a theme that resonates deeply with the challenges and opportunities facing today’s legal practitioners. According to him, it speaks to the core responsibilities of lawyers, not only to their clients and the courts, but to the society at large. By placing discipline, ethics, and innovation at the forefront of the discourse, the Kaduna Branch has drawn attention to the urgent need for introspection and reform, particularly at a time when the credibility of the legal profession is increasingly under scrutiny and the demands of justice delivery are evolving rapidly.
He expressed concern over incidents of professional misconduct among lawyers and the attendant erosion of public trust. “The inability of lawyers to comply with the Rules of Professional Conduct calls for deep reflection,” he noted. “We must remember that these Rules not only demand discipline and ethical behavior but also impose a duty on us to constantly update our knowledge base.”
Mazi Afam Osigwe emphasized that continuous professional development is not optional, it is a regulatory obligation and a strategic necessity. “Staying abreast of new developments in law and legal practice is part of the ethical standards we are bound to uphold. It is the only way we can meaningfully adapt and remain relevant in a fast-changing legal and socio-economic environment,” he said.
He urged participants to treat the week’s engagements not as mere formalities, but as critical moments to reflect on their individual and collective commitments to the values that define the legal profession. “The times demand that we uphold discipline, deepen our ethics, and embrace innovation. It is by doing so that we can safeguard the dignity and relevance of our profession,” he stated.
The President concluded with prayers for a successful and impactful Law Week, stressing that the insights shared must find practical expression in daily practice, not remain confined to the conference halls.
