The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced that Prof. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, SAN, OON (Life Bencher), one of Africa’s foremost legal scholars and women’s rights advocates, will moderate the breakout session titled “Thirty Years After Beijing” at the NBA Annual General Conference 2025. The session will take place on Monday, 25th August 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM at the International Conference Centre, Enugu.
Prof. Ezeilo is a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria, feminist activist, and Professor of Law, widely celebrated for her contributions to gender justice and human rights. A former Dean of Law at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, she is the founder of Women Aid Collective (WACOL) and the Tamar Sexual Assault Referral Centre. She pioneered the teaching of “Women, Children & the Law” in Nigerian academia, shaping legal education with a gendered lens.

Internationally, she served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children (2008–2014), where she championed global efforts to combat human trafficking. Her trailblazing work has earned her numerous accolades, including the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), the 2019 National Human Rights Award, recognition among BBC’s 100 Women (2022), and global commendations for her leadership in law and social reform.
The “Thirty Years After Beijing” session will revisit the historic 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, assessing three decades of progress on women’s rights while confronting lingering challenges and highlighting fresh opportunities for empowerment across law, politics, and society.
With her unmatched expertise, Prof. Ezeilo will guide this critical discussion, ensuring it delivers not only reflections but also forward-looking strategies for advancing gender equality in Nigeria and beyond.
