Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), joined Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on a working visit to Kuje Correctional Facility. The visit aimed to assess ongoing rehabilitation programs and engage with inmates on transforming correctional centres into reformative institutions.
The NBA President commended the facility’s efforts in providing vocational, creative, and academic programs, noting that over 150 inmates are enrolled in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), including postgraduate students. He also acknowledged the skill acquisition programs, which equip inmates with marketable skills.
Osigwe reiterated the NBA’s commitment to supporting reform through its Pro Bono Centre, pledging to collaborate with the correctional centre to identify and provide legal representation to inmates without access to counsel. He emphasized the importance of forgiveness and reintegration, urging Nigerians to welcome rehabilitated individuals back into their communities.
The Minister of Interior affirmed his commitment to inspecting the facility’s progress, interacting with inmates, and strengthening collaboration with the NBA towards reformation. He noted that joint efforts would foster a correctional system grounded in dignity, justice, and transformation.
The visit underscored the NBA’s and Ministry’s shared commitment to rehabilitation and reintegration, highlighting the potential for transformation beyond bars.
