NBA Remuneration Committee Hosts Webinar on Practical Implementation of the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order 2023

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Remuneration Committee, under the leadership of Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, Ph.D., convened a highly engaging virtual webinar on Thursday, October 23, 2025, titled “How the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order 2023 Can Work in Practice: A Case for the Adoption of Technology.”

The session, organized in partnership with Mamosoft Solutions Ltd and PayByTheLine, brought together leading voices in law and technology to explore innovative approaches for implementing the Remuneration Order 2023 in a way that ensures fairness, transparency, and enforceability.

The event featured an impressive panel comprising

  • Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, Ph.D.—Partner, Greenfield Chambers; Chairman, NBA Remuneration Committee (Speaker)
  • Chibueze Maduka, Esq.—CEO, Mamosoft Solutions Ltd (Speaker)
  • Caleb Oboagwina, Esq.—CEO, EasyRead Consultancy Ltd (Speaker)
  • Oluwaseyi Arowosebe, Esq. — Chairman, Remuneration Committee, NBA Garki Branch (Moderator)

In his welcome address, Chief Obegolu set the tone for the discourse, emphasizing the need to bridge the gap between policy formulation and real-world enforcement. He highlighted that the Remuneration Order 2023, made by the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Committee to standardize professional fees and promote equity, marks a significant milestone after years of advocacy. However, he noted that effective implementation remains the central challenge.

Chief Obegolu expressed appreciation to the NBA leadership for its unwavering support in driving the remuneration reform agenda and commended Mamosoft Solutions Ltd for developing a digital tool designed to aid enforcement.

The software, he explained, has been presented to the committee, but the forum was organized to allow stakeholder engagement and feedback from potential users before adoption.

He further revealed that another technology firm had also submitted a proposal to the Committee and that a second stakeholder engagement session would be convened to evaluate that platform as well.

In his remarks, Chief Obegolu underscored the evolving nature of the legal profession and the transformative role technology can play in ensuring compliance with the Remuneration Order.

“In 2025, with AI-driven contract drafting, blockchain-secured billing, and cloud-based case management tools at our fingertips, the time is ripe to reimagine remuneration not as a static fee schedule, but as a dynamic, tech-enabled ecosystem,” he said.

He painted a picture of a near future where automated invoicing, data analytics dashboards, and secure digital payment systems can standardise fee computation, track compliance, and enhance transparency across law firms, from Band A to Band C jurisdictions.

Chief Obegolu noted that since the inauguration of the Remuneration Committee by Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Committee has intensified awareness creation and dissemination of the Remuneration Order to members and clients. While the level of compliance has been encouraging, he acknowledged that “more needs to be done in terms of enforcement.”

The webinar, according to him, was therefore not merely an exploratory session but a call to action, a collaborative effort to harness innovation and technology in upholding the dignity of the legal profession.

He concluded with a thought-provoking challenge:

“If technology can revolutionize finance and healthcare, why not law? The Remuneration Order 2023 is our blueprint; let technology be our builder.”

The event ended with an interactive session where participants shared insights on implementation frameworks, challenges, and potential technological integrations for effective monitoring and enforcement of the order.

The NBA Remuneration Committee reaffirmed its commitment to continuous stakeholder engagement, evaluation of technological tools, and sustained advocacy towards achieving full compliance with the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order 2023.
