Meet Our Panelist: Bar, Bench and Legislative Forum

GOMBE — The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe Branch, has announced Hon. Justice Joel Filibus Agya, the Chief Judge of Taraba State, as a distinguished panelist for the upcoming Law Week scheduled for May 18, 2026.

Justice Agya is set to provide expert insight during the “Bar, Bench and Legislative Forum,” focusing on the critical topic of judicial independence, legislative oversight, and the bar’s role in balancing institutional powers.

A Legacy of Legal Excellence

Born on November 22, 1960, in the Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, Justice Agya’s journey in the legal profession spans over four decades. After completing his early education in Wukari and Yola, he earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984.

His career began in 1985 as a State Counsel in the Ministry of Justice for the former Gongola State. After five years of public service, he transitioned into private practice, establishing J.F. Agya & Co. in 1990. His dedication to the rule of law led to his appointment as a High Court Judge in Taraba State in 2002.

Leadership and Judicial Reform

On January 8, 2024, Justice Agya reached the pinnacle of the state’s judiciary when he was sworn in as the substantive Chief Judge of Taraba State. Since taking the oath of office, he has become a catalyst for modernization within the court system.

Under his leadership, the Taraba State Judiciary has seen significant advancements, including:

  • Digital Transformation: The initiation of digitized court proceedings to enhance efficiency and record-keeping.

  • Social Justice: The establishment of a specialized Family Court to address domestic issues and child welfare with greater sensitivity.

  • Integrity in Service: In July 2024, his reputation for impartiality was formally recognized by the Wukari Traditional Council, which honored him for his upright administration of justice.

Justice Agya’s participation in the Gombe Law Week underscores the event’s theme, “Strengthening Justice through reforms: Lawyers as agents of change,” as he continues to be a leading voice for judicial excellence and institutional integrity in Nigeria.
