Gombe Branch Law Week: Sen. Abdullahi Idris Umar to Speak on Judicial Independence and Legislative Oversight

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe Branch, has confirmed former Minister of Transport, Senator Abdullahi Idris Umar, Esq., as a panelist for its Law Week scheduled for May 18, 2026.

He will participate in the Bar, Bench, and Legislative Forum, contributing to discussions on the theme: “Judicial Independence and Legislative Oversight: The Role of the Bar in Balancing Institutional Powers.”

Born on December 28, 1959, Umar is an indigene of Gombe State and a trained legal practitioner. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and was called to the Bar after completing his studies at the Nigerian Law School. He is a Partner at Abdullahi Idris Umar & Co. and previously served as State Legal Adviser of the Peoples Front of Nigeria in Kano State between 1989 and 1990.

His political career spans both legislative and executive roles. He represented Yamaltu-Deba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), before being elected Senator for Gombe Central Senatorial District, serving from 2007 to 2011.

Umar later served in the Federal Executive Council as Minister of Transport under the administration of Goodluck Jonathan from 2011 to 2015.

With his extensive experience across lawmaking and executive governance, his participation is expected to provide valuable insights into strengthening institutional balance and advancing justice sector reforms.
