The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has called on legal practitioners across the country to rise to their constitutional responsibility of defending the rule of law as the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.
The President’s charge was delivered at the 2026 Law Week of the NBA Calabar Branch, where he was ably represented by Ntufam Mba Ukweni, SAN.
In his message, the NBA President commended the Branch for adopting the theme “Rule of Law: Safeguarding Democracy, Ensuring Accountability,” describing it as both timely and deeply reflective of Nigeria’s current realities. He emphasized that the rule of law remains the bedrock of any functional democracy, serving as a safeguard for citizens and a necessary restraint on the excesses of power.
He reminded lawyers of their dual role as advocates and ministers in the temple of justice, noting that their responsibilities go beyond client representation to include the defence of constitutionalism, protection of fundamental rights, and promotion of accountability at all levels of governance.
The President warned against actions capable of undermining democratic institutions, stressing the need for vigilance in the face of policies or conduct that erode due process, judicial independence, and institutional integrity. He urged members of the Bar to speak up when necessary and to stand firm in defence of justice, even when doing so comes at a cost.
With the country gradually entering a politically sensitive period ahead of the 2027 general elections, the NBA President highlighted the critical role lawyers will play in shaping public confidence in the justice system. He cautioned against the filing of frivolous or speculative suits and the weaponization of legal processes for partisan purposes, urging practitioners instead to uphold ethics, professionalism, and merit in electoral and political litigation.
He further underscored the importance of synergy between the Bar and the Bench, noting that the quality of advocacy presented before the courts directly impacts the administration of justice. According to him, both institutions must work collaboratively to ensure that electoral disputes and politically sensitive matters are handled with integrity, fairness, and strict adherence to due process.
On accountability, the President maintained that it must be actively demanded and enforced, stressing that public office holders must continually be reminded that power is held in trust for the people and must be exercised transparently and responsibly.
He also lauded the NBA Calabar Branch for sustaining a culture of meaningful engagement through its Law Week, describing it as a vital platform for reflection, dialogue, and the exchange of ideas capable of shaping legal practice and national policy.
The President concluded by urging all participants to recommit themselves to the ideals of justice, integrity, and professional excellence, while congratulating the Branch on what promises to be a successful and impactful Law Week.
The event continues with a series of discussions aimed at strengthening democratic governance and reinforcing the rule of law in Nigeria.
