The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, on 22nd April 2026 attended the NBA Warri Branch Law Week, where he delivered the opening remarks on the theme: “Public Trust in the Administration of Justice in Times of Economic and Security Challenges.”
In his address, the President commended the Branch for convening a timely and thought-provoking discussion, noting that Nigeria’s current economic and security realities have placed considerable strain on the justice system. He emphasised that the effective administration of justice is a collective responsibility, requiring the unwavering commitment of judicial officers, legal practitioners, law enforcement agencies, and all relevant stakeholders. According to him, the system can only function optimally when each actor performs their role with integrity, diligence, and a firm sense of duty.
The President underscored the urgent need to strengthen public trust in the judiciary, describing confidence in the system as the bedrock of its legitimacy. He reiterated a fundamental principle: that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done. In his words, public perception remains a critical factor in sustaining faith in the administration of justice.
He further highlighted that the conduct of stakeholders, both in words and actions, as well as the quality, consistency, and clarity of judicial decisions, play a decisive role in either building or eroding public trust. He stressed that transparency, professionalism, and strict adherence to the rule of law are indispensable to maintaining the credibility of the justice system
In conclusion, the President called for a renewed and collective commitment to upholding the values that inspire public confidence, urging all stakeholders to rise to the occasion and reinforce the integrity of the justice system, particularly in these challenging times.
