Innovate or Be Left Behind” — NBA President Charges Lawyers at Jalingo Law Week

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, on Tuesday urged lawyers to embrace innovation or risk irrelevance, in a goodwill message delivered at the NBA Jalingo Branch Law Week 2026.

He began by expressing deep appreciation to the Branch for the warm and rousing welcome he received upon arrival, noting that his experiences in Taraba State have gifted him not just professional colleagues, but lifelong allies.

He remarked that the exceptional reception and sacrifices made by members of the Branch reflect a strong sense of unity and commitment to the ideals of the Bar.

The President also commended the notable presence of members of the judiciary at the event, describing it as a powerful testament to the enduring and productive Bar–Bench relationship in Taraba State.

Drawing from personal experience, he reflected on the evolution of technology over time. He recalled that during his university days, laptops were not a part of legal training or practice, yet today they have become indispensable tools.

Using a broader illustration, he referenced how Nokia once dominated the technology space but lost relevance due to its failure to innovate, while Apple Inc., through products like the iPhone, rose to redefine the market.

According to him, this shift underscores a critical lesson for the legal profession: innovation is no longer optional. Lawyers must embrace change and leverage technology to remain relevant in an evolving world.

He stressed that this call to innovation extends equally to the judiciary, as modern justice delivery increasingly depends on the effective use of technology.

Aligning his remarks with the theme of the Law Week, “Raising the Bar: Equipping Lawyers for the Modern Legal Landscape,” the NBA President praised the Branch for choosing a theme that speaks directly to the realities of contemporary legal practice.

He noted that both the Bar and the Bench share a collective responsibility to ensure that lawyers are properly equipped to meet present and future demands.

He further commended the Jalingo Branch for its consistent participation in national Bar activities, acknowledging their loyalty and steadfast support over time. He expressed gratitude for the Branch’s unwavering commitment to the growth and unity of the Association.

In closing, the President reiterated that the legal profession must be prepared to embrace the ongoing evolution in society. He urged lawyers and judges alike to adapt proactively, ensuring that justice delivery remains efficient, seamless, and accessible to all.
