Dear Distinguished Colleagues,
The attention of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has been drawn to a Memorandum dated 13th July 2026, issued by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, titled “Prohibition of the Use of the Title ‘Barrister’ as a Prefix to Names.”
According to the Memorandum, which was issued on the directive of the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, all litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars, and lawyers appearing before the Supreme Court are directed to discontinue the use of the title “Barrister” as a prefix to their names in all official correspondence, court records, documents, identity materials, and other official engagements within the Supreme Court, with immediate effect.
Members of the Bar are hereby informed of the contents of the Memorandum and are advised to take due note of the directive, particularly in all official engagements and correspondence.
