AGC 2026 Opens in Grand Style as NBA Raises the Curtain on “Beyond Limits”
Distinguished Colleague,The curtain officially rose on the 66th Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference (AGC 2026) on Sunday as thousands of lawyers, judges, diplomats, policymakers, senior advocates, academics, captains of industry and distinguished guests filled the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt, for an opening ceremony that matched the ambition of this year’s theme, “Beyond Limits.”
Long before the ceremony commenced, delegates streamed into the venue from across Nigeria and beyond. Every section of the stadium reflected the diversity of the legal profession, while the atmosphere combined celebration, expectation and renewed optimism for the future of the Bar. The excitement was unmistakable as delegates exchanged greetings, reunited with colleagues and eagerly anticipated the commencement of the conference.
The opening ceremony showcased the Nigerian Bar Association at its very best disciplined, united and forward-looking. From the colourful cultural performances to the formal procession of dignitaries, every segment reflected months of careful planning and execution.Welcoming delegates, NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, described the Annual General Conference as more than a yearly gathering of lawyers.
He challenged members to use the conference as an opportunity to reflect on the profession’s responsibilities to the nation, strengthen the administration of justice and prepare the Bar for emerging realities.He urged lawyers to embrace innovation, defend democratic institutions and remain steadfast in promoting the rule of law.In one of the defining moments of his address, the President reminded delegates that the survival of democracy depends on the strength of institutions rather than individuals, declaring:
“Democracy does not survive on strong men, but on strong institutions.”

The statement drew a resounding applause from delegates and underscored the President’s call for an independent judiciary, accountable governance and a legal profession that remains fearless in defending constitutional democracy.Delivering the keynote address, Former President of Liberia, His Excellency George Manneh Weah, reflected on leadership, resilience and service. Drawing from his life’s journey, he encouraged lawyers to see challenges as opportunities for growth, reminding delegates that true leadership is defined by integrity, sacrifice and the positive impact one leaves on society.
His message resonated strongly with the conference theme, inspiring participants to continue pushing the boundaries of excellence in legal practice and public service.Throughout the ceremony, speakers returned to common themes—the defence of constitutional democracy, judicial independence, ethical leadership, innovation and the indispensable role of the legal profession in shaping Nigeria’s future. Collectively, they challenged lawyers to remain courageous, principled and committed to strengthening institutions that safeguard justice and the rule of law.
One could not overlook the tremendous effort invested in delivering an opening ceremony of this scale. The seamless coordination, rich programme, hospitality and attention to detail reflected the dedication of the AGC 2026 Planning Committee, led by Abdul Mohammed, SAN. From delegate experience to logistics and programme execution, the Committee delivered an event worthy of the NBA’s flagship conference.Special recognition also goes to the numerous volunteers, conference staff and support teams whose work behind the scenes ensured that thousands of delegates enjoyed a smooth and memorable opening day.
From my desk as Communication Officer, I have covered numerous NBA events over the years, but this opening ceremony carried a distinct energy. The packed stadium, the enthusiasm of delegates, the quality of the conversations and the pride with which lawyers gathered from every part of the country demonstrated the enduring strength and unity of the Nigerian Bar Association.Credit must equally go to Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, whose administration has continued to pursue a Bar that is innovative, inclusive and nationally relevant.
As his tenure gradually draws to a close, the successful opening of AGC 2026 stands as another significant milestone, reflecting thoughtful leadership, purposeful reforms and an unwavering commitment to advancing the legal profession.Indeed, the opening ceremony was more than the commencement of another conference.
It was a celebration of the Nigerian Bar’s shared vision, its resilience and its determination to keep raising the standard of legal practice.When the lights illuminated the stadium and delegates rose in applause, it became evident that this was more than the opening of a conference. It was the beginning of another chapter in the history of the Nigerian Bar Association, a chapter that invites every lawyer to think bigger, serve better and truly live Beyond Limits.
