WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2026 LIVED EXPERIENCES HEARD: REAL VOICES, REAL CHANGE

People come to lawyers because they need answers. But who do we turn to when we are struggling ourselves? Some of the hardest battles are not always visible. Behind professional composure may be someone navigating emotions that are never spoken aloud. Many colleagues manage demanding workloads, financial uncertainty, bereavement, illness or the strain of caring for someone they love. We cannot assume that because someone keeps showing up, all is well.

This year’s theme, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” asks us to listen and allow what we hear to shape what we do. Within our profession, people must be able to seek help without fearing judgment or being considered less capable. Asking for support should never count against a lawyer’s professional standing. The Nigerian Bar Association is committed to making mental wellbeing part of our focus on members’ welfare, with accessible, confidential support from qualified professionals and initiatives informed by lived experience.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A diagnosis can affect far more than the body. Those undergoing treatment, survivors and family caregivers may need emotional support alongside medical care. Each of us can make it easier for someone to speak: ask how a colleague is doing, listen without judgment, respect their privacy and encourage professional help when needed.

When people tell us what has helped them, or where support has failed them, let us take it seriously. Being heard should lead to better support, more considerate workplaces and an Association that responds. Sometimes, the most powerful assurance we can offer is that no one has to face the journey alone.

Your story matters. Your wellbeing matters, and there is strength in asking for support.
