Gombe Branch Law Week: Hassan El-Yakub, SAN to Lead Conversation on Judicial Independence and Institutional Balance

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe Branch, has spotlighted Hassan El-Yakub, SAN, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Bauchi State, as a key panelist for its Law Week holding on May 18, 2026.

El-Yakub will feature at the high-level Bar, Bench, and Legislative Forum, where he is set to engage the theme: “Judicial Independence and Legislative Oversight: The Role of the Bar in Balancing Institutional Powers.” His inclusion signals a deliberate focus on reform-driven leadership and institutional accountability.

A seasoned legal practitioner and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, El-Yakub built his career through years of private practice before his elevation to the inner Bar. His appointment as Attorney-General marked a shift toward systemic reform within Bauchi State’s justice sector.

Since assuming office under Governor Bala Mohammed, he has driven a series of consequential reforms. Notably, he discontinued the state’s long-standing reliance on external counsel for high-profile prosecutions—an approach that previously cost Bauchi State an average of ₦500 million annually.

By localizing legal services within the Ministry, his administration reportedly saved over ₦1.8 billion from just three cases.

Beyond cost-efficiency, the Ministry under his leadership has also evolved into a revenue-generating institution, recording over ₦236 million from legal drafting and advisory services. Within the same reform window, over 500 criminal cases—including serious offences such as armed robbery, homicide, and kidnapping—have been handled, reflecting a more assertive prosecutorial framework.

El-Yakub has equally maintained a strong advocacy stance on human rights, particularly in addressing gender-based violence and child protection. His push for the establishment of a Child Protection Implementation Committee underscores a broader commitment to social justice within the state.

In the area of economic development, he played a central legal role in facilitating a $1.5 billion investment agreement for a major cement production project in Alkaleri LGA, reinforcing the intersection between legal frameworks and economic growth.

As the NBA Gombe Branch Law Week convenes thought leaders across the legal and governance spectrum, El-Yakub’s participation is expected to inject practical insights on reform, fiscal discipline, and the evolving role of legal institutions in strengthening democratic governance.
