The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, engaged in significant international visits and meetings to foster global legal cooperation and strengthen the NBA’s ties with prominent legal institutions worldwide.
Mr. Maikyau paid a courtesy visit to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague. During this visit, he discussed with the ICJ’s President, Judge Joan E. Donoghue, the court’s role in promoting international justice and potential collaborations with the NBA. The visit included a tour of the ICJ facilities, providing Mr. Maikyau with valuable insights into the court’s operations and current cases.
In conjunction with his visit to the ICJ, Mr. Maikyau also visited the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). He met with the PCA’s secretary-general, Mr. Hugo Hans Siblesz, and presented gifts as a token of appreciation for the PCA’s work in international dispute resolution. Continuing his international engagements, Mr. Maikyau had a productive meeting with the president of the Law Society of England and Wales. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between the two legal bodies, sharing best practices, and exploring avenues for collaboration in legal education and professional development. This meeting highlights the NBA’s commitment to building solid relationships with prominent legal societies worldwide.
Mr. Maikyau attended the Bar Leaders Meeting at the Paris International Bar Association (IBA) Conference. This gathering provided an excellent platform for Mr. Maikyau to engage with bar leaders worldwide, discuss global legal trends, and exchange ideas on improving the legal profession. The NBA’s participation in this conference demonstrates its active involvement in the international legal community and its dedication to advancing law practice in Nigeria.
During his visit to The Hague, Maikyau also took the opportunity to exchange pleasantries with the ICJ’s Deputy Registrar.
