“Democracy Must Work for the People”: NBA President Calls for Justice, Rule of Law on June 12

We wish all Nigerians a happy Democracy Day..

As we commemorate Democracy Day, we reflect not only on the significance of June 12 in our national history, but also on our collective journey toward justice, freedom, and inclusive governance in Nigeria.

June 12 is more than a date; it is a symbol of the Nigerian peoples’ demand for accountable leadership, credible elections, and a political system that truly reflects the will of the governed. It reminds us that democracy must never be taken for granted; it must be protected, nurtured, and made to work for the people..

For democracy to thrive, the rule of law must remain its bedrock. Institutions must be allowed to function independently and transparently. The voices of the people must not only be heard but respected, through functional representation, access to justice, and responsible governance.

As legal practitioners, we have a sacred duty to defend democratic ideals. We must continue to proffer constructive solutions to problems, speak truth to power, question unconstitutional actions, promote civic education, and ensure that human rights and fundamental freedoms are not sacrificed on the altar of expediency or disregard for the rule of law.

The worsening insecurity and killings in some parts of the country, suspension of democratic institutions in Rivers State, dangerous misuse of the Cybercrime Act to suppress dissent and shrink the democratic space etc. are stark reminders of the challenges confronting our democracy.

In the face of these threats, the judiciary must rise to the occasion and take a firm stand in defense of democratic principles. In doing this the courts must be seen to dispense evenhanded justice. As stated by Warren E. Burger, “A sense of confidence in the courts is essential to maintain the fabric of an ordered liberty, for a free people who abandon the institution of the judiciary will eventually find themselves in a dictatorship.”

We remain steadfast in championing these ideals and holding the line for democracy, justice, and the rule of law. We call on all arms of government and all stakeholders to recommit themselves to building a Nigeria where the promises of democracy are fulfilled, not just for the privileged few, but for all.

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.
