Gombe Branch Law Week: Sen. Joshua M. Lidani to Speak on Judicial Independence and Legislative Oversight

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe Branch, has announced former Senator Joshua M. Lidani, Esq. as a panelist for its upcoming Law Week scheduled for May 18, 2026.

Lidani, a seasoned lawyer, former Deputy Governor of Gombe State, and two-term Senator representing Gombe South (2011–2019), will feature in the Bar, Bench, and Legislative Forum. He is expected to speak on the topic: “Judicial Independence and Legislative Oversight: The Role of the Bar in Balancing Institutional Powers.”

Born on October 1, 1957, Lidani hails from Gombe State and obtained his LL.B from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, where he was called to the Bar.

Before venturing into politics, he built a solid legal career, including serving as Chairman of the NBA Bauchi Branch between 1991 and 1992. His political trajectory spans grassroots to national leadership, having served as Chairman of Kaltungo Local Government Area, Deputy Governor under Abubakar Habu Hashidu (1999–2003), and later as Senator under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), before defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2018.

During his time in the Senate, Lidani held key positions including Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics.

Widely regarded as a grassroots politician with notable legal insight and a calm leadership approach, his participation is expected to enrich discussions at the Law Week, particularly on the interplay between the Bar, Bench, and Legislature in strengthening Nigeria’s justice system.
