A STEADFAST HAND AT THE HELM OF THE YOBE JUDICIARY

DAMATURU, NIGERIA – Since his historic elevation to the pinnacle of the state’s third arm of government, Hon. Justice Gumna Kashim Kaigama has stood as a beacon of stability and judicial integrity. Officially sworn in as the substantive Chief Judge of Yobe State on September 29, 2020, by His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni, Justice Kaigama’s tenure has been defined by a commitment to meritocracy and institutional modernization.

His journey to the head of the judiciary followed a recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC), succeeding the late Justice Garba Musa Nabaruma. Today, he continues to steer the Yobe State High Court toward a new era of efficiency and transparency.

THE MAKING OF A JURIST: EARLY LIFE AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Born on March 1, 1964, in Damboa, Borno State, Justice Kaigama’s path to the bench was paved by rigorous academic discipline. A product of the University of Maiduguri, he earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons) in 1987.

His formal entry into the legal profession came in 1988, when he was called to the Nigerian Bar after completing his studies at the Nigerian Law School in Lagos. This solid educational foundation laid the groundwork for a career that would span private practice, the magistracy, and the high court bench.

  • National Service: His expertise was sought beyond state borders, serving as Chairman of the Election Petition Tribunals in both Zamfara State (2011) and Kogi State (2019–2020).

ARCHITECT OF JUDICIAL REFORM: EMBRACING THE DIGITAL FRONTIER

This landmark reform, initiated during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensured that:

  1. Justice remained accessible despite movement restrictions.

  2. Safety protocols were maintained without compromising legal rights.

  3. The Yobe Judiciary positioned itself at the forefront of digital adoption in Northern Nigeria.
