Leadership is Responsibility, Not Position" – Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, at NBA-YLF National Summit

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has called on young lawyers across the country to embrace purposeful and value-driven leadership as the foundation for the future of the legal profession.

He made this call on April 23, 2026, while speaking at the National Summit of the Nigerian Bar Association Young Lawyers’ Forum, held in commemoration of the Forum’s 20th Anniversary.

The Summit, which brought together young legal practitioners from across Nigeria, provided an opportunity to reflect on two decades of the Forum’s contributions to mentorship, professional development, and the advancement of young lawyers within the Bar.

Speaking on the theme “Rising to Lead,” the NBA President commended the leadership and members of the Young Lawyers’ Forum for sustaining a dynamic and impactful platform dedicated to nurturing the next generation of legal professionals.

He emphasised that leadership within the legal profession must be intentional, anchored on competence, guided by integrity, and driven by a commitment to service. According to him, the future of the Bar depends largely on the preparedness, ethical standards, and continuous development of young lawyers.

Mazi Afam Osigwe, further urged young practitioners to view leadership not as a position to be attained, but as a responsibility to be earned through discipline, consistency, and a genuine desire to make meaningful contributions to the profession and society.

Addressing the evolving nature of legal practice, the NBA President highlighted the importance of resilience, adaptability, and innovation, noting that these qualities are essential in navigating technological advancements and changing socio-economic realities.

He encouraged members of the Young Lawyers’ Forum to take advantage of opportunities for capacity building, mentorship, and professional exposure, while remaining steadfast in upholding the rule of law.

The NBA President concluded by calling on young lawyers to rise above limitations and actively position themselves as future leaders of both the Bar and the nation.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Bar Association to continue supporting the growth and empowerment of the Young Lawyers’ Forum as a vital pillar in strengthening the legal profession in Nigeria.
