On this International Workers’ Day, the Nigerian Bar Association joins millions of Nigerians and workers across the country in celebrating the dignity of labour, the resilience of the Nigerian worker, and the enduring value of hard work in nation-building.
Today offers us a moment to reflect on the critical role that workers play in sustaining our economy, strengthening our institutions, and advancing the ideals of justice, equity, and development. From the public servant to the artisan, from the teacher to the trader, and indeed to legal practitioners across the country, your daily sacrifices continue to shape the future of our nation.
As members of the legal profession, we recognize that the protection of workers’ rights is not merely a policy objective but a constitutional imperative. The NBA remains committed to advocating for fair labour practices, access to justice for workers, and the enforcement of laws that uphold dignity, safety, and equity in the workplace.
This celebration must be accompanied by honest reflection. Many Nigerian workers still face significant challenges, including poor working conditions, delayed or inadequate remuneration, and limited access to social protection. These realities call for renewed commitment from all stakeholders, government, employers, and institutions, to create an environment where labour is truly valued and rewarded.
We therefore call for sustained reforms that prioritize the welfare of workers, strengthen labour institutions, and ensure that justice is accessible to all, especially the most vulnerable.
As we celebrate today, we salute the courage, dedication, and perseverance of Nigerian workers. Your contributions do not go unnoticed, and your impact remains the backbone of our collective progress.
Happy Workers’ Day.
Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN
President, Nigerian Bar Association
