The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), at its meeting held today in Awka, Anambra State, adopted a resolution demanding improved welfare, remuneration, and working conditions for judicial officers across Nigeria.
NEC expressed deep concern over reports highlighting the deplorable welfare conditions faced by judicial officers, including the reported incident involving a Customary Court President in Ondo State who was allegedly involved in an accident while using commercial transportation due to inadequate welfare provisions.
The Council described the situation as deeply troubling and reflective of broader systemic failures affecting the independence, dignity, and effectiveness of the judiciary.
NEC emphasized that judicial officers occupy a central position in the administration of justice and cannot reasonably be expected to discharge their constitutional responsibilities effectively under poor welfare and working conditions.
The Council reiterated that adequate remuneration and welfare for judicial officers are constitutional imperatives necessary for safeguarding judicial independence and sustaining public confidence in the justice system.
NEC therefore called on State Governments, including the Ondo State Government, as well as relevant federal authorities, to prioritise improved remuneration, security, transportation, and working conditions for judicial officers nationwide.
The Council further reaffirmed the NBA’s readiness to engage constructively with relevant stakeholders toward achieving sustainable reforms aimed at protecting the dignity and independence of the judiciary.
