Human rights lawyer and the 1st Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Sabastine Anyia has marked his 50th birthday with a deeply reflective message celebrating a lifetime of purpose, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to justice.
In a moving statement titled “Fifty: A Jubilee of Purpose,” Anyia reflected on his personal journey through five decades of life and over twenty years of legal practice, describing the courtroom as both a battleground and a place of service.
“Today I turn 50,” he wrote. “Fifty years of life, and over two decades in the trenches of law defending the voiceless, challenging illegality, and insisting that the Constitution means what it says.”
The legal practitioner recounted years spent handling difficult cases involving human rights, land disputes, contracts, and constitutional issues, emphasizing that many victories came not from convenience but from persistence and courage.
“I think of the sleepless nights drafting processes, the early morning filings, the appeals we won not because we were smarter, but because we were stubborn for justice,” he stated.
Anyia also spoke candidly about the realities of human rights advocacy in Nigeria, noting that the work is often demanding, misunderstood, and at times personally costly. According to him, the struggle remains worthwhile whenever justice is achieved for ordinary citizens.
“Human rights work in Nigeria is not glamorous. It is often thankless. You lose friends in high places. Yet every time a detainee walks free, every time an unlawful demolition is stopped, every time a citizen realizes ‘I actually have rights,’ it’s worth it,” he said.
Addressing young lawyers, the senior practitioner urged them to remain grounded in both legal knowledge and moral conviction, advising them not to allow technicalities to overshadow justice and truth.
He also paid tribute to mentors, colleagues, family members, and particularly his three sisters, whom he described as “everything” to him, while expressing gratitude to God for sustaining him through every victory and setback.
“As I enter this Jubilee, my prayer is simple: More wisdom for the bench. More courage for the Bar. More justice for Nigeria,” he declared.
Anyia ended with a bold declaration that despite reaching the milestone age of 50, his journey in the pursuit of justice is far from over.
“The next chapter begins. The work continues,” he stated.
