Distinguished Colleagues,
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, has today, June 21, 2024, secured the release of our member, Pius I. Awoke, Esq., of the Abakaliki Branch, from the custody of the Department of State Security (DSS).
Information about the DSS’s detention of Mr. Awoke since July 2021 was recently brought to the attention of the NBA’s present leadership. Upon receiving the information, the NBA President immediately led efforts, culminating in Mr. Awoke’s release today.
Additionally, the NBA leadership secured the release of Onyiba Emmanuel Chinonso, a computer science student at Ebonyi State University, who was arrested and detained alongside our member, Mr. Awoke.
The NBA President will meet with Pius I. Awoke and Onyiba Emmanuel Chinonso tomorrow. The NBA remains committed to interrogating the circumstances of their prolonged detention.
