NBA Women Forum Hosts Empowering Mentorship Programme in Kano

Dear Esteemed Colleagues,

The NBA Women Forum, Kano State Chapter, in collaboration with the NBA Women Forum Mentorship Committee, organised a mentoring programme themed “Empowering Excellence: Developing Skills and Professionalism for the Next Generation of Women in Law” on June 6, 2024.

The impactful event was graced by the National Chairperson of the Women Forum (NBAWF), Mrs Chinyere Okorocha, the National Treasurer, Mrs Mercy Ijato Agada, and the Coordinator of the Mentorship Committee, Mrs Funke Bamikole.

In her welcome remarks, Mrs Okorocha stressed the crucial role mentorship plays in the career success of female lawyers, particularly in building confidence and overcoming limiting beliefs.

The keynote address, delivered by Hon. Justice Hafsat Yahaya on behalf of the Chief Justice of the State, Hon. Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, encouraged female lawyers to step out of their comfort zones to achieve their desired career success.

The event also featured a panel discussion on the theme, where attendees were inspired by the personal stories and contributions of the panellists: Hon. Justice Hafsat Yahaya, Mercy Ijato-Agada, Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim (Head of the Welfare Committee, NBAWF), and Amb. Safiyya Nuhu (Public Law lecturer at Bayero University).

A highlight of the programme was the “speed mentorship session,” where mentees were paired with mentors to provide guidance, support, and knowledge in their respective fields of law practice.

The mentors included Mrs Kemi Oyewo (an in-house lawyer), Mrs Augusta Uzu, Haj Rabi Shehu, Hajara Hamza Safiyo, and Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim. The State Lead, Fatima Sagir, and the Coordinator of the Mentorship Committee, NBAWF, Funke Bamikole, coordinated the session.

NBA Kano Branch Chairman Sagir S. Gezawa, NBA Ungoggo Branch Chairman Muhammad Jibril, and the Chairperson of FIDA Kano, Haj Bilkisu Sulaiman, delivered goodwill messages at the event.

The mentoring programme had a high impact on all attendees. We commend Fatima Sagir, the State Lead of the Kano Chapter, and Zainab Atoba, the Head of the Mentoring Committee, for organising such an empowering and impactful occasion.

Thank you,

Chinyere Okorocha,

NBAWF, National Chairperson.
