Nigerian Bar Association to Launch Digital Stamps Amid Production Delays

Distinguished Colleagues,

I am compelled to address the ongoing issue regarding delays in producing NBA stamps. This challenge has persisted since the early days of our administration, with numerous complaints from members about prolonged delays in processing their stamp applications.

While I have discussed this matter at various National Executive Council (NEC) meetings, it is now essential to inform the entire membership of our Association about this unfortunate situation.

Firstly, I sincerely apologise to all colleagues affected by these delays. It is crucial to provide context to the challenges we face. As previously explained at NEC meetings, including the one held on June 20th, 2024, the delays in stamp production are mainly due to difficulties the stamp producer faces in sourcing production materials.

Registration for the 2024 AGC is still ongoing.

The producer has cited issues related to foreign exchange rates and inflation. While the producer had requested an increase in the cost of stamps, we resisted this request to protect our members’ interests. However, it has become clear that the current price of stamps is no longer sustainable and needs to be reviewed.

Again, I apologise to all members affected by the delays in stamp application processing. We have communicated daily with the stamp producer to address this situation quickly.

I am pleased to announce that the producer has confirmed the delivery of materials for the production of all pending stamp applications. We expect to begin the mass dispatch of backlogged stamps to various branches starting Tuesday, August 20th, 2024.

Additionally, in my report to the NEC on June 20th, 2024, I emphasized the need for the NBA to develop and implement a digital stamp (e-stamp) as an alternative to the problematic physical stamps.

I am pleased to inform you that the digital stamp process has been completed. The current leadership of the Association will unveil the digital stamps in the coming days. Details of the digital stamps and the application process will be publicized shortly. This new system aims to alleviate the inconveniences caused by the unpredictability of the physical stamp system.

Furthermore, during our investigation of the complaints regarding delayed stamps, we discovered that some members who claimed to have applied for stamps had not completed the application process on the portal.

It is important to note that a stamp application is only completed once the branch-due receipt is uploaded. The portal will also be updated to ensure that lawyers receive immediate email notifications for incomplete stamp applications.

Registration for the 2024 AGC is still ongoing.

Once again, I, on behalf of the NBA leadership, apologize for the inconvenience and encourage you to look forward to the unveiling of the new digital stamp system.

Please be assured of my continued commitment to serve with humility and integrity until the end of this administration.

Thank you,

Adesina Adegbite, FICMC, MCIArb
General Secretary
