Ogwuashi-Uku, Delta State – The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ogwashi-Uku Branch successfully conducted its 2024 election, resulting in the appointment of a new Executive Committee. The election, held on Sunday, 14th July 2024, saw Benjamin Okoh Esq emerge as the new Chairman with 19 votes, narrowly defeating his opponent, I. G. Okunwa Esq, who garnered 17 votes.
The electoral process was overseen by a three-man committee chaired by Ben Ighoverio, with V. O. Isibor as secretary and Peter Nwaekete as a member. The election, noted for its transparency and fairness, also resulted in the unopposed election of the following members:
- Ifeoma E. Ochei Esq (Mrs.) as Vice-Chairman,
- O. P. Okprike Esq as Secretary,
- G. O. Asikawili Esq as Treasurer,
- Abolo Mercy Esq as Welfare Secretary.
The election was held at Trixwin Hotel, Isah Road, Ogwashi-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, with 37 accredited eligible voters and 36 votes cast.
The outgoing branch chairman, C. E. Okpu, commenced the proceedings around 2:00 pm, emphasising compliance with NBA national directives that branch elections be held before the national polls. He praised the candidates for their maturity and campaign decorum. The electoral committee then took charge, with both candidates for the chairman position presenting their manifestos before voting.
The voting, conducted via secret ballot, concluded at approximately 3:38 pm. Ben Ighoverio Esq announced the results, declaring Benjamin Okoh Esq the new Chairman with 19 votes. I. G. Okunwa Esq graciously accepted the outcome and congratulated his opponent.
In his acceptance speech, Benjamin Okoh thanked the members for their unity and participation. “Today, history has been made. The branch has given me its mandate, and I am very humbled. I promise not to let any members down. Let’s maintain good unity and work together,” he urged I. G. Okunwa to advance the branch’s objectives.
The outgoing Chairman, C. E. Okpu Esq, and other notable members, including Chief M. M. Nnamdi, F. U. Akaeke Esq, Chief Z. E. Ojeogwu, A. C. Oluiji Esq, and C. I. Ndego Esq, commended the peaceful conduct of the election and emphasised the importance of active participation in the Midwestern Bar Forum and other initiatives to strengthen the branch.

The positions of Financial Secretary and Assistant Secretary remain vacant and will be filled in a by-election scheduled for the next monthly general meeting on Sunday, 28th July 2024. The inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected Executive Committee will follow.
The new leadership is dedicated to advancing the interests and activities of the NBA Ogwashi-Uku Branch from August 2024 to July 2026.
